Dubai-Tel Aviv flight sends hijack signal before plunging thousands of feet; dramatic emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
A routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying mid-air crisis on Wednesday after a reported violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit, sending a Flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 into a rapid descent and triggering an international hijack alert.
Flight FZ1073 first transmitted the emergency code 7700, before switching briefly to 7500, the international code indicating unlawful interference. The alarming signal prompted Israeli authorities to scramble fighter jets as the aircraft suddenly began losing altitude.
Within minutes, flight-tracking data showed the Boeing plunging by approximately 16,000 to 17,500 feet, raising fears that something catastrophic was unfolding aboard the aircraft.
Then came the extraordinary reports from passengers. According to Israeli media accounts and passenger testimony, the two pilots allegedly became involved in a violent struggle inside the cockpit, with one reportedly attacking the other with a knife. Passengers described hearing screams and witnessing blood as the confrontation unfolded.
The aircraft was eventually diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely, bringing an extraordinary airborne crisis to an end.
Was the aircraft deliberately forced into the rapid descent? Did one pilot attempt to seize control of the aircraft? And what exactly happened inside the cockpit before passengers and crew became aware that something was seriously wrong?
Some reports have suggested that one pilot may have deliberately initiated the descent or attempted to crash the aircraft. Those claims have not been officially established.
Reports that the pilots were Russian and Ukrainian nationals are also yet to be independently confirmed. Most importantly, claims that the injured pilot died from his wounds remain unconfirmed.
Authorities are now investigating the sequence of events aboard FZ1073, including the cockpit confrontation, the emergency and hijack codes, the dramatic loss of altitude and the condition of the two pilots.
A flight that began as an ordinary journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv suddenly became a fight for control at thousands of feet above the ground. The full story of what happened inside that cockpit is still emerging.
