Agra Teachers’ MLC Poll: SP: A Rough Road To Victory

Agra Teachers’ MLC Poll: SP Wins, But Allegations Cast A Shadow Over The Election Marked by Serious Booth Capturing and Intimidation

October 28, 2026: From being denied a BJP ticket to defeating the BJP on an SP ticket, Dr. Akash Agarwal’s victory carries a story far bigger than one seat.

Samajwadi Party candidate Dr. Akash Agarwal has defeated BJP candidate Hari Kishore Tiwari to win the Agra Teachers’ constituency seat in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC). Agarwal, who held the seat as an Independent after winning in 2020, contested this time on an SP ticket after being denied a BJP nomination.

But the road to victory was marked by serious allegations, emotional confrontations and disputes over the electoral process. During polling on October 23, Agarwal alleged booth capturing, intimidation, harassment of teachers and supporters, and irregularities at several locations. The Election Commission subsequently declared voting void at three booths and ordered repolling on October 26 after finding serious irregularities. Some officials were also suspended.

Then came counting day. On October 27, counting was temporarily halted amid disputes over ballots and allegations of violence and irregularities. SP supporters protested outside the counting centre, while both sides raised accusations. Agarwal continued to allege that teachers had been harassed and the electoral process compromised.

Agra, Uttar Pradesh: Samajwadi Party candidate Akash Agarwal wins the teachers’ MLC seat. He alleges violence during the counting of votes and booth capturing.

Dr. Akash Agarwal said to ANI:

, “Our teacher colleagues were harassed… booth capturing also took place. It was very painful. The teachers’ MLC election has changed. I believe that teachers will never contest in again. The Uttar Pradesh government had an image that it was against terrorists and corruption, but when I saw that my colleagues were being intimidated and threatened and I witnessed booth capturing, that image shattered… Our national president works for the welfare of all sections of society.”

The final result, however, was clear: Agarwal won the seat and received his certificate of election. His victory comes alongside another SP win in the Varanasi Teachers’ constituency, even as the BJP retained or won several other MLC seats across Uttar Pradesh.

The significance extends beyond the Legislative Council. With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, these results offer a glimpse into the political contest taking shape between the BJP and the opposition.

Yet the most important question is not simply who won or lost. When teachers allege intimidation, candidates raise complaints about polling irregularities, and counting is disrupted by disputes, public confidence in the electoral process becomes central to the story.

The Election Commission’s action in ordering repolling at three booths demonstrates that serious complaints warranted intervention. The remaining allegations deserve transparent examination, evidence-based scrutiny and clear answers.

Dr. Akash Agarwal has won Agra. Now, the questions raised during the election deserve answers.
