Grief as Indictment: A Father’s Murder and the Demand for a School That Outlasts Politics
What began as a routine inspection of a government primary school in Bankura has become a stark indictment of the collision between grassroots education activism and local political power in West Bengal.
On 13 August, Abdul Hafiz, a Cockroach Janta Party volunteer, entered a village school and asked basic questions about drinking water, toilets and learning conditions as part of the “School Thik Karo” campaign. Two nights later his father, Sheikh Mohammad Mafik, was dead.
According to CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke, local assailants allegedly attacked Abdul and demanded a public apology video for exposing the school’s deficiencies. When he refused, both father and son were assaulted; Mafik later succumbed to his injuries at Burdwan Medical College.
Police have arrested eight people, including a local BJP leader and booth president, and registered a murder case. The BJP’s state leadership has denied any organisational link, insisting the allegations remain under investigation.The tragedy carries particular weight because Abdul had earlier participated in the CJP’s high-profile education protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
His response to the killing has been even more striking: he rejected monetary compensation and demanded instead a world-class government school built in his father’s name. In a political culture where cash often substitutes for accountability, the demand reframes justice as structural reform rather than payout.
The case therefore raises harder questions than a single murder investigation. It asks whether asking ordinary questions about public schools can still provoke lethal retaliation, and whether the identities and alleged affiliations of those arrested will be examined with the same intensity as the crime itself.
