“There are obviously certain legacy issues that over time we will be working to resolve,” Abdullah noted. “We are very hopeful and optimistic that the engagement between the US and Jammu and Kashmir will both widen and deepen in the years ahead.”
He made clear that the conversation would now continue on two tracks: between Ambassador Gor and Washington, and between Srinagar and New Delhi.This was no routine diplomatic stop. A serving US ambassador meeting a sitting Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar, publicly affirming the territory’s place within India, and opening the door to a possible downgrading of the travel advisory is a development that will be closely read in New Delhi, Islamabad, and beyond.
