From Pari Chowk to Kashmere Gate, a 16-year-old Class 11 student was allegedly assaulted while the bus crossed the Noida-Delhi stretch. Two accused arrested; police seize bus for forensic examination
A horrifying case of alleged sexual violence has once again raised a deeply disturbing question about the safety of women and children travelling through the Delhi-NCR region.
A 16-year-old Class 11 student from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus during a nearly 47-kilometre journey from Greater Noida’s Pari Chowk to Kashmere Gate, according to Delhi Police and reports published on Monday. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of August 4, when heavy rain and darkness had left the teenager stranded.
The teenager had reportedly left home after a family disagreement and was attempting to reach her cousin in Noida. She mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk. Amid the rain, an empty sleeper bus stopped after she signalled for help.
Police say the driver, identified as Kuldeep, and conductor Sandeep, allegedly told her they were heading towards Noida’s Sector 63 and allowed her to board.
What happened next forms the centre of the investigation.
According to the girl’s allegations, shortly after the bus began moving, the conductor allegedly made obscene advances towards her. She has alleged that both men subsequently sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her when she resisted.
47 KILOMETRES. NO HELP. NO ESCAPE.
The bus allegedly continued towards Delhi, covering approximately 47 kilometres before reaching the Kashmere Gate area.
Police reports say the vehicle had curtains around its sleeper berths, potentially preventing people outside from seeing what was happening inside. The teenager was allegedly abandoned on Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal late at night, after which she approached Kashmere Gate police and reported the assault.
The alleged crime has inevitably drawn comparisons with the 2012 Nirbhaya case, not because the circumstances are identical, but because once again a woman allegedly suffered sexual violence inside a moving bus in the Delhi region.
And the most disturbing question is not simply what allegedly happened inside the bus.
It is how a vehicle could travel roughly 47 kilometres through the Delhi-NCR corridor without the alleged crime being detected.
HOW DID SHE ESCAPE?
After the alleged assault on the ~47 km run from Pari Chowk toward Delhi, driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep dropped her on Ring Road near Kashmere Gate ISBT late at night and fled toward Timarpur.
She had resisted; they allegedly threatened to kill her if she kept resisting. That is the only “how she survived the journey” detail police have put on record – not a mid-route escape.
Frightened, she went to Kashmere Gate police station, told officers what happened, and an FIR followed. Police later used CCTV along the route and arrested both men at a parking area in Timarpur
CCTV TRAIL LEADS POLICE TO ACCUSED
Delhi Police launched an investigation and reportedly used CCTV footage from along the route to identify the vehicle.
The two accused were subsequently arrested from a bus parking area in Timarpur, and the UP-registered sleeper bus was seized and sent for forensic examination.
Investigators reportedly found that the bus had earlier broken down and had been taken to a workshop in Surajpur, Greater Noida, for repairs. After the repairs, the driver and conductor were allegedly taking the empty bus towards Timarpur when they encountered the teenager at Pari Chowk.
THE SAFETY SYSTEM THAT FAILED?
The case has also put the spotlight on enforcement of safety regulations governing commercial and sleeper buses.
NDTV reported that the bus crossed a long stretch containing CCTV cameras, major intersections and police checkpoints, while allegedly no effective intervention occurred during the journey. The report also raises questions about safety requirements such as crew verification, visibility inside buses, GPS/VLT systems, CCTV and panic-button mechanisms.
Those questions now demand answers.
Because safety regulations mean little if they exist only on paper.
A teenager allegedly boarded a bus because she believed she was asking strangers for help. Instead, according to her account, the vehicle became a place of terror from which she could not escape.
The investigation is continuing, and the allegations against the two arrested men remain to be established in court. The survivor’s identity has been withheld in accordance with legal protections for victims of sexual offences.
But the larger question is already staring Delhi-NCR in the face: How many safeguards are required before a child can travel through the city without becoming invisible inside a moving vehicle?
