September 6, 2026: Panic and horror gripped Delhi’s Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon after a five-storey building used as student accommodation suddenly collapsed, trapping several people beneath tonnes of concrete and debris.
The building came down at around 1:30 pm, sending residents and bystanders into a desperate scramble for survivors. Emergency teams rushed to the site as desperate rescue operations began. At least one person has died, while several others have been rescued and taken to hospital. At least two of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
The situation remains fluid, with reports suggesting that dozens of students may have been inside the building when it collapsed. Some people trapped beneath the rubble were reportedly able to make phone calls, giving rescuers a precious lifeline as teams worked to locate them.
The rescue operation has brought together Delhi Fire Services, police and other emergency agencies, with heavy equipment being used to remove the rubble while rescuers search for signs of life.
The collapse has also raised disturbing questions about building safety and construction work. Initial reports indicate that work was underway in the basement, while officials have pointed to the possibility of unauthorised excavation as a factor. The exact cause, however, has yet to be conclusively established.
For families waiting outside the cordoned-off site, every passing minute has become unbearable.
