13 FIRs Registered, No Further Action Against Peaceful Protesters; Arrests to Be Reviewed for Immediate Release

In a major development following weeks of nationwide outrage over alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination, the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has announced it will not pursue further legal action against peaceful protesters involved in the demonstrations. The decision comes after Delhi Police registered 13 cases in connection with the protests as of 6:00 p.m. on July 29, 2026.
According to an official press release issued by the Home Department, Government of NCT of Delhi, the decision follows a careful review of the circumstances surrounding the protests. It takes into account the Supreme Court’s order dated July 28, 2026, in Shailendra Mani Tripathi v. Union of India & Others.
The government has declared that no adverse legal action will be taken against individuals who participated in the protests, provided they have no criminal antecedents, in line with the Supreme Court’s directions. Authorities have also been instructed to expeditiously review all arrests and detentions made in connection with these cases and facilitate the release of those eligible.
This marks a significant de-escalation of the controversy: the Delhi Government further stated that it does not intend to initiate any future proceedings against those involved in the protests, effectively treating the matter as closed.
The decision has been issued with the approval of the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and was formally signed by Santosh D. Vaidya, IAS, Principal Secretary (Home).
The announcement is expected to bring relief to hundreds of students, parents, and supporters who participated in demonstrations demanding accountability over the alleged examination irregularities. It also signals an important shift toward reconciliation after one of the largest student-led protest movements in recent years in the capital, while preserving the exception that individuals with serious criminal backgrounds remain outside the scope of the government’s protection.
