US–Iran Crisis Deepens as Hormuz Becomes Global Flashpoint
The US-Iran confrontation remains the biggest immediate threat to global energy and regional stability. The 60-day deadline linked to the US-Iran memorandum has expired without a broader agreement. President Donald Trump has ruled out extending the arrangement, demanded Iran’s surrender and warned of military action if efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz are obstructed.
Tehran has signalled a shift towards a more offensive posture. Shipping through Hormuz remains severely disrupted, with conflicting claims over how operational the strategic waterway is. A vessel was reportedly struck while exiting the strait, while the Houthis have claimed further attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. Oil prices have risen for a third consecutive session, with Brent crude moving above $91 a barrel as fears of prolonged supply disruption grow.
Gaza: Genocide Finding, Ceasefire Talks and Continuing Israeli Operations
Gaza remains at the centre of the Middle East crisis. US envoy Jared Kushner has held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over a proposed framework involving Hamas disarmament, humanitarian measures and reconstruction.
But diplomacy is taking place against the backdrop of continuing Israeli military operations and a catastrophic humanitarian situation. A UN Commission of Inquiry concluded in 2025 that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel strongly rejects. The International Court of Justice has not yet issued a final judgment on the genocide allegations.
The immediate diplomatic challenge is therefore enormous: securing a durable ceasefire while addressing disarmament, Israeli military presence, humanitarian access and the reconstruction of Gaza.
Lebanon: Israeli Strikes Threaten to Reignite a Wider War
The crisis is also spilling into Lebanon. Fresh Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have triggered new displacement despite the fragile ceasefire with Hezbollah. UN officials have warned that the renewed violence risks a dangerous escalation.
Israel says its military operations are directed at Hezbollah and intended to prevent the group’s military rebuilding. Hezbollah has warned that continued Israeli attacks will draw a response. The Lebanon front now represents one of the most dangerous pathways through which the wider US-Iran conflict could expand.
Russia–Ukraine War Intensifies in the Air
Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks of the war against Russia, with hundreds of drones reportedly targeting Moscow and surrounding areas.
Russia has continued its own missile and drone campaign. A Russian missile strike in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region killed at least 10 people. The conflict is increasingly dominated by long-range drones, missiles and attacks deep behind the front lines, pushing the war into an increasingly dangerous phase.
Korean Peninsula: US Cuts Back Military Drills
President Trump has ordered a substantial reduction in joint US-South Korean military exercises, citing his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Trump said Kim had responded to US overtures for talks.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has sought to reassure the public that the US-South Korea alliance remains strong, but the reduction in exercises has raised concerns about deterrence on the peninsula.
Sudan: Another Catastrophe Fades From the Headlines
Sudan remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces continues.
The crisis is spilling across borders. More than 650,000 refugees and asylum seekers in neighbouring South Sudan face the loss of food assistance because of a major funding shortfall, while millions inside South Sudan are already experiencing acute food insecurity.
Indonesia Earthquake: Death Toll Nears 70
A magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province has killed around 70 people and displaced thousands. Rescue and recovery operations continue as authorities assess damage.
Other Global Flashpoints
Trump’s approval rating has fallen amid the prolonged Iran conflict, while Washington faces continuing trade tensions with Canada. The South China Sea and Taiwan remain longer-term strategic flashpoints between China and the US-led regional security system.

Jharkhand Cancels JSSC-CGL Exam After Prolonged Student Agitation
The Hemant Soren government has cancelled the JSSC-CGL examination and recruitment examinations conducted by TDPL since 2014 following weeks of student protests over alleged irregularities.
The government has also ordered a wider review of examinations and recruitment processes handled by the private agency. While many protesting students welcomed the decision, around 2,000 candidates who had already secured government jobs through the disputed process are now protesting over the possibility of losing their appointments.
Student groups continue to demand a CBI investigation and stronger safeguards against examination fraud. Some protesters remain on hunger strike, while another phase of agitation has been announced.
Supreme Court in Focus
The Supreme Court has rejected a petition seeking replacement of hanging with lethal injection as India’s method of execution.
The Court has also sought the Centre’s response on establishing standardised and time-bound procedures for investigating examination-paper leaks. Other important matters before the Court include elephant corridors and compliance with Cauvery water-sharing arrangements.
Markets Under Pressure
Indian equities suffered another difficult session. The Sensex fell around 493 points while the Nifty extended its losing streak, with IT stocks among the major losers.
The rupee has weakened amid elevated crude prices and concerns over the economic consequences of the escalating West Asian conflict. Any prolonged disruption around Hormuz could further increase India’s import bill and inflationary pressure.
Security and Disaster Updates
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said security agencies had dismantled an alleged ISI-backed network ahead of Independence Day, with more than 200 arrests reported.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the tunnel-flooding accident at a hydropower project in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has risen to nine.
Heavy rainfall and flood alerts remain in force across several states. Odisha is facing significant flooding, prompting the state government to announce a major relief package, while the IMD continues to warn of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions.

The world’s most dangerous fault line currently runs through Iran, Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. What happens there could determine not only the future of the Middle East but also global oil prices, shipping, inflation and the wider balance of power.
Ukraine remains locked in an increasingly technological war with Russia, while Sudan continues to suffer a devastating humanitarian crisis largely outside the world’s immediate attention.
In India, the integrity of competitive examinations, judicial intervention, extreme weather and the economic consequences of West Asian instability dominate the national conversation.
The central global question is no longer simply where the next crisis will emerge. It is whether several existing crises can escalate simultaneously without triggering a much larger confrontation.
