After roads crumbled during the monsoon rains, Akhilesh Yadav, national president of the Samajwadi Party and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, launched a sharp attack on the BJP government in a post.
He said:
The whopping 1 lakh crore rupees spent in the name of Maha Kumbh on Prayagraj’s so-called ‘smart development’ stand as living, flowing proof of that grand corruption.
They set out to create the ‘divine’; but it looks like ‘filth’ from every angle! Now, will they rename Allahabad yet again from Prayagraj to ‘Jalrajan Nagar’?
The BJP folks never imagined that the veil on their great sin would be lifted—sometimes in a religious guise, sometimes through nature’s hand. The punishment for sin is meted out right here on this earth.
Yadav calls this the “living, flowing proof” of mega-corruption: funds spent, yet the city remains vulnerable.The wordplay is deliberate. Officials promised “divya”; what appears is “dravya”, money diverted or wasted, leaving liquid failure.
The sarcastic suggestion of renaming Prayagraj “Jalrajanagar” underscores the irony. BJP leaders, Yadav argues, never expected their alleged excesses to be revealed by nature itself after religious spectacle. Punishment, he notes, arrives on this earth.
The point is structural. Large-scale religious events become vehicles for opaque spending. When monsoon exposes non-functional drains and incomplete works, it reveals not just technical failure but accountability deficits. Public money intended for durable public goods yields temporary optics. The floods do not invent the charge; they make the gap between advertised grandeur and lived reality impossible to ignore.
