CBI Gives Clean Chit to Sanjeev Kumar; Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike With Nada Giving Him Juice; after PM Modi’s Midnight Address
In the shadow of a midnight promise, a hunger strike ends – and an old suspicion dies. Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation at midnight, declaring “nothing is more important than the future of India’s youth” and unveiling tougher anti-leak laws, fast-track courts, parliamentary debate, protester protections, and compensation for shattered families, Sonam Wangchuk finally broke his 26-day fast. In a Gurugram hospital room, under the gaze of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, the education reformer accepted a cup of juice. After surviving on water and salt, losing more than ten kilograms, and pushing his body to the brink in solidarity with students and the Cockroach Janta Party, Wangchuk yielded to the government’s formal assurances.
Yet the same day brought another revelation. The CBI stated it found no evidence linking Sanjeev Kumar alias Sanjeev Mukhiya, once named in Bihar Police’s original FIR because of his alleged history in other paper-leak scams, to the theft or distribution of the 2024 NEET-UG question paper.
Absconding at the time, later arrested in separate cases, Mukhiya was questioned by the agency but never chargesheeted. He secured bail in the NEET matter while remaining in custody for other crimes. The CBI insisted its probe identified every conspirator and beneficiary: the leak originated at Oasis Public School in Hazaribagh, papers were photographed, solvers prepared keys, and a localised network reached roughly 150 candidates. Forty-five accused now face charges in Patna.
The timing is deliberate. Modi’s midnight words and the ministers’ bedside assurances calmed one crisis. The CBI’s clean chit closed another chapter of suspicion. Still, the demand that filled Jantar Mantar, the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, remains unspoken. Reforms have been promised. Political accountability has not. The sit-in continues. Whether these assurances can restore the trust of millions of students is the question India must now answer.
