AUGUST 24: A potentially crucial diplomatic engagement between India and China is underway as National Security Adviser Ajit Doval heads to Beijing for the 25th round of Special Representatives talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The meeting comes at a particularly significant moment, with both countries attempting to stabilise ties after years of military tensions along the Line of Actual Control.
Doval and Wang, the designated Special Representatives for the boundary question, are scheduled to hold their talks on Tuesday. The mechanism, established in 2003, was created to pursue a political settlement to the long-running boundary dispute spanning roughly 3,488 km.
The timing makes the meeting even more important. The talks come just weeks before the expected visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to New Delhi for the BRICS summit on September 12–13, raising the possibility of a major India-China diplomatic reset.
For New Delhi, maintaining peace and tranquillity along the LAC, border stability and de-escalation remain central concerns. China and India have also recently continued official-level discussions on implementing earlier understandings and preparing for this round.
This is not merely another diplomatic meeting. Doval’s Beijing mission could help determine whether the India-China relationship moves towards genuine stabilisation or remains trapped in the shadow of the border dispute.
