RESERVATION HATAO ANDOLAN: A DIGITAL REVOLT BREAKS INTO THE STREETS LED BY HARSH DUBEY AND ABHISHEK AGNIHOTRI
A new and increasingly visible youth-led movement has erupted in Delhi, taking the contentious debate over caste-based reservation from Instagram feeds to the streets. The “Reservation Hatao Andolan”, associated with organisers including NEET aspirant Harsh Dubey and Abhishek Agnihotri, mobilised supporters on August 21, 2026, demanding the abolition or fundamental reform of caste-based reservation.
What began as a social-media campaign has rapidly developed into a street movement, drawing attention for its call for a system based on merit and socioeconomic disadvantage rather than caste. The organisers have also raised objections to certain University Grants Commission equity provisions and advocated removing caste identification from some official and educational processes.
The protest, however, immediately ran into a confrontation with Delhi authorities. Police had made it clear that no permission had been granted for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar, where prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS were in force. Authorities instead granted permission for a peaceful gathering at Ramlila Ground, limited to 500 people and ending at 4 p.m.
But sections of the protesters still gathered at Jantar Mantar, refusing to accept the change of venue. Images and videos circulated online as supporters chanted slogans and insisted that the protest should take place at the location originally announced. The standoff transformed what might have been another social-media campaign into a visible confrontation over both reservation policy and the right to protest.
The movement’s emergence is politically significant because reservation remains one of India’s most deeply contested social questions. Its supporters describe the campaign as a demand for equality and a merit-based system; critics are likely to argue that dismantling affirmative action without addressing historical discrimination could deepen existing inequalities.
For now, the Reservation Hatao Andolan represents a striking new chapter in India’s increasingly digitalised protest culture: a movement born online, fuelled by young voices, and now testing its strength on the streets of the capital.
