Rahul Gandhi Draws a Red Line: “No Discussions Until Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns”
The political battle over the nationwide student protests against the alleged NEET paper leaks intensified on Friday as Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi declared that the opposition would refuse to engage in discussions until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, surrounded by journalists and senior Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gandhi delivered an uncompromising message that has quickly gained traction across social media: “Until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns, there won’t be any discussions.” The statement, widely shared online under the slogan “Seedhi Baat, No Bakwas,” signals a hardening of the Congress party’s position on the education crisis.
Launching a scathing attack on the Education Minister, Gandhi described Pradhan as a “criminal education minister” and “the symbol of the collapse of our education system,” accusing him of being directly responsible for the anger that has driven thousands of students onto the streets.
Reiterating the demands raised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led movement at Jantar Mantar and during the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” march, Gandhi called for the immediate resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, strict action against those responsible for the alleged paper leaks and the police action against protesters, and a public apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to India’s youth.
In a dramatic moment during the media interaction, Gandhi presented an injured student before television cameras, alleging that the young man suffered serious eye injuries after security forces used pellet guns during a peaceful demonstration. Rejecting official denials, Gandhi accused the government of responding to students with force instead of accountability.
Gandhi has emerged as one of the most prominent political supporters of the student movement, meeting injured protesters, leading demonstrations, and repeatedly raising the issue inside and outside Parliament. His latest declaration makes it clear that, for the Congress, Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation has become a non-negotiable condition before normal parliamentary engagement can resume.
Rahul Gandhi has focused on students and youth politics for nearly two decades, beginning formally in September 2007 when he was appointed AICC General Secretary in charge of the Indian Youth Congress and NSUI. He introduced internal elections in these organisations (starting 2008), expanded membership through talent hunts, and prioritised education quality, employment, and student representation.
Over the years, he has consistently raised issues such as paper leaks, fee hikes, privatisation of education, NEP concerns, campus democracy, and youth unemployment. He has interacted with student leaders, endorsed protests, and used public platforms to highlight systemic education failures. His prominent role in the 2026 NEET protests is a continuation of this long-standing engagement rather than a new departure.
