RAHUL GANDHI VISITS INJURED FARMERS, QUESTIONS PM MODI’S SILENCE AS SHAMBHU BORDER STANDOFF INTENSIFIES
The political battle over the proposed India-US trade deal has taken a dramatic turn as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited injured farmers admitted to hospital following the escalating confrontation at the Shambhu Border, where Haryana Police continue to block farmers attempting to march towards Delhi.
Meeting the injured protesters personally, Gandhi spoke with those hurt during the clashes, expressing solidarity with the farming community while launching a blistering attack on the Narendra Modi government. He questioned why the Prime Minister has remained silent even as tensions continue to rise, accusing the Centre of ignoring the fears of millions of Indian farmers.
According to Gandhi, the concerns being raised by farmer unions are neither political nor imaginary. Protesters argue that opening India’s agricultural markets to heavily subsidized American farm products could severely impact small and marginal farmers, particularly those dependent on dairy, poultry, oilseeds, pulses, and other vulnerable sectors. Farmer organizations warn that without adequate safeguards, cheaper imports could destabilize rural livelihoods across the country.
The visit has injected fresh political energy into the agitation, with Youth Congress workers joining demonstrations alongside senior Congress leaders. The protest movement, spearheaded by groups including the Desh Bachao Morcha, continues to demand complete transparency over the proposed trade agreement, insisting that no deal affecting India’s farmers should be finalized without broad consultation.
Meanwhile, the Modi government has maintained that India’s core agricultural interests, including rice, wheat, and dairy, remain protected while broader trade negotiations seek to strengthen the country’s economy. However, the opposition has seized upon the police barricades, restrictions at the border, and reports of injuries to portray the government’s response as insensitive to the growing anxiety in rural India.
As the standoff at Shambhu Border shows no signs of easing, the controversy surrounding the India-US trade negotiations has evolved into far more than an economic debate. It has become a fierce political contest over the future of Indian agriculture, farmers’ livelihoods, and the government’s willingness to engage with those who fear they could bear the greatest cost of globalization.
