KNIFE SCARE AT MP Pappu Yadav’S PRESS MEET: ATTACK IN BROAD DAYLIGHT SHOCKS CAPITAL

Slipper hurled, knife allegedly brandished as dramatic confrontation erupts at Independent MP’s Delhi residence; police detain suspect

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 3: A press conference in the heart of the national capital descended into frightening chaos after Independent MP Pappu Yadav was confronted at his Delhi residence, with one man allegedly hurling a slipper and another reportedly carrying or brandishing a knife.

The extraordinary incident has raised serious questions over the security of elected representatives and the increasingly hostile atmosphere surrounding political dissent in India.

Delhi Police have detained a suspect, identified in reports as Sumit alias “Happy” Sharma, for questioning. Police reports said a knife was recovered following the confrontation, although Sharma has denied that he was carrying one and said he would cooperate with the investigation.

Yadav has described the incident as a “plot to kill” him and claimed that he had received death threats earlier in the day.

The attack comes amid an already charged political atmosphere surrounding the Purnea MP. Yadav had recently joined Opposition protests over alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, an issue that has rocked Uttar Pradesh politics after an FIR was registered and eight people were arrested in connection with alleged theft and embezzlement of temple offerings.

But Sunday’s confrontation crosses a darker line.

Political disagreement is the lifeblood of democracy. Violence, intimidation and threats against elected representatives are its antithesis.

If an elected Member of Parliament can face such a confrontation during a press conference in the national capital, the question inevitably becomes larger than Pappu Yadav himself: how secure is India’s political space for disagreement?

The investigation must now establish exactly what happened, who was responsible and whether the confrontation was spontaneous or planned.

Because democracy cannot become a battlefield where arguments end when weapons appear.
