Bathed and Blessed by Messi: The Story Behind Football's Most Viral Photo

Challenging the Legend 19 Years Later! -Messi

One of football’s most heartwarming viral images is based on a real event. In 2007, as part of a UNICEF and FC Barcelona Foundation charity photoshoot, a 20-year-old Lionel Messi helped bathe a five-month-old baby named Lamine Yamal after the child’s family won a raffle to meet a Barça player. The lighthearted photos showed a shy Messi gently holding the infant while Yamal’s mother looked on.

Nearly two decades later, that baby has become Spain’s teenage football sensation, Lamine Yamal. The old photographs have since gone viral worldwide, symbolising an extraordinary full-circle moment: the boy once bathed by Messi has grown into one of the brightest stars capable of sharing the same stage as the Argentine legend.

Neither of them could have imagined that one day people across the world would look at that tiny bathtub and see not soap and water, but destiny.

Some stories are written in trophies. Some are written in goals.
This one began with a plastic tub, a nervous footballer, a smiling family, and a baby who had absolutely no idea he would one day become one of the game’s brightest stars.

One can call it “blessings by association!”
