September 2, 2026: In New York City Manhattan, one of the world’s most recognisable public spaces became the scene of a deadly knife attack Monday afternoon when Erin Piacenti, a 32-year-old Bank of America vice president, was fatally stabbed in Times Square.
Piacenti, a New Jersey resident, was among two people attacked near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue at about 4:24 p.m. Police said the assault appeared to be random and unprovoked.
The second victim, a 68-year-old man, was also stabbed and taken to hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition.
According to the NYPD, the suspect was 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens, who was carrying two large knives. After the attacks, responding officers confronted her and ordered her repeatedly to drop the weapons.
Police attempted to use Tasers, but they were ineffective. Authorities said Cisneros then advanced toward officers while still armed, prompting two officers to fire their weapons. She was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the suspect had a documented history of mental-health-related encounters with police, although authorities said there was no arrest history. Investigators have found no evidence indicating terrorism.
Piacenti worked as a vice president in Bank of America’s Business Selection and Conflicts unit and had joined the bank in 2025. She was also a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Fordham Law School.
Bank of America expressed shock and grief over her death, describing her as a valued colleague and extending its condolences to her family and loved ones.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through New York’s financial and corporate community, particularly because the attack occurred in the middle of Times Square, one of the most heavily policed and crowded locations in Manhattan.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is examining the circumstances surrounding the police shooting, while authorities continue investigating the stabbing itself. Body-camera footage from the officers is expected to be released at a later stage.
The incident raises fresh questions about safety in one of New York’s busiest tourist destinations, even as overall violent crime in the city has declined this year. It is reportedly the second fatal stabbing in Times Square in 2026.
