Witkoff and Kushner Meet Zelensky After Moscow Talks With Putin; Major Differences Over Territory and Security Remain
U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv for their first wartime visit to Ukraine, intensifying Washington’s diplomatic push to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Their visit came just a day after more than three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The envoys met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials in Kyiv, with discussions described as substantive and constructive. However, the high-profile diplomatic mission produced no immediate breakthrough or concrete agreement toward ending the conflict.
The Moscow meeting was similarly short on tangible results. Kremlin officials called the discussions useful and said several settlement ideas had been put forward, but major differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly over territorial control, Ukraine’s security guarantees and its future relationship with NATO.
Zelenskyy has pressed for stronger Western security support, including additional air-defence systems, as Ukraine faces continued Russian missile and drone attacks.
The visits mark a renewed attempt by the Trump administration to revive stalled peace diplomacy. Yet with neither side appearing ready to concede on the central issues, Washington’s latest peace mission has opened another diplomatic door without yet finding a way through it.
