LATHIS IN THE NIGHT: RANCHI STUDENT PROTEST TURNS INTO A HIGH-TENSION SHOWDOWN OUTSIDE ASSEMBLY
NEW DELHI, AUGUST 10: The student recruitment crisis in Jharkhand intensified dramatically on Monday night as police continued efforts to disperse protesting job aspirants following a day of confrontation around the state Assembly.
What began as a massive “Vidhan Sabha Gherao” by students demanding action over alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations descended into clashes, with police deploying water cannons, tear gas and repeated lathi charges after protesters breached several layers of barricading.
By nightfall, the confrontation had not ended.
Videos circulating from Ranchi showed chaotic scenes on the streets, with heavily equipped police personnel pursuing groups of protesters amid running crowds and clashes. Reports indicated another baton charge during the evening as police moved to clear areas around the Assembly. The visuals have intensified questions over the use of force against young people demanding government jobs.
The students have now been protesting for around 17 days, alleging irregularities, paper leaks and other problems in recruitment examinations. Their demands include cancellation of disputed examinations and an independent investigation, including a CBI probe.
The government, meanwhile, points to steps already taken, including investigations and action against officials. On Monday, the Jharkhand CID arrested former JPSC chairperson L. Khiangte in connection with alleged examination irregularities, while the Enforcement Directorate has also begun a probe.
But for the protesters, those measures have not settled the larger question: Can young people trust the recruitment system that determines their future?
The confrontation became particularly politically charged as the Assembly protest coincided with Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s birthday. A protesting student leader, Devendra Nath Mahto, who had been on hunger strike, was also hospitalised after his health deteriorated.
Tonight, tension remains high. Protesters have indicated that the movement will continue from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, raising the possibility of another confrontation.
The central image of Ranchi tonight is therefore not simply one of barricades and batons. It is a generation of job aspirants standing against a system they say has repeatedly failed them.
The examinations were supposed to determine their futures. Tonight, the streets are demanding answers instead.
